Europium Oxide (Eu₂O₃): TV Red Phosphors, Chemical Catalysts, Biological Solvents, Medical Contrast Agents, Soil Tracers

Europium oxide is an inorganic compound appearing as light pink powder. Insoluble in water but soluble in acids. Volatilizes with steam, alkaline, toxic, and irritates eyes/respiratory tract/skin. Absorbs CO₂ from air and reacts with inorganic acids to form water-soluble salts.

Applications

  1. Activator for color TV red phosphors and high-pressure mercury lamp phosphors
  2. Production of dyes, rubber vulcanization accelerators, pharmaceuticals, fungicides, amino resins, etc.
  3. Solvent for fibroin and other proteins
  4. Contrast agent in medical industry
  5. Tracer for soil remediation

Production Method
Mainly produced by oxalate precipitation: Dissolve europium chloride/nitrate, adjust pH to 2 with oxalic acid, precipitate europium oxalate by adding ammonia. After heating/aging, separate/wash, dry at 110°C, then calcine at 900-1000°C to obtain Eu₂O₃.
