Dysprosium Oxide (Dy₂O₃): Phosphor Activator, Scintillation Crystals, Ceramic Additive, Dy/Fe Alloys

Dysprosium oxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Dy2O3. It appears as a white powder with a density of 7.81g/cm³ and melting point of 2408°C. Insoluble in water but soluble in acids to form trivalent salts. It volatilizes with steam, exhibits alkalinity, and is toxic - irritating to eyes, respiratory tract and skin. Absorbs carbon dioxide from air and reacts with inorganic acids to form water-soluble salts.

Applications

  1. Used as activator for long-afterglow phosphors
  2. Additive for special scintillation crystal growth
  3. Additive for special scintillation ceramics
  4. Used in production of metallic dysprosium or dysprosium-iron alloys

About Dysprosium Oxide
The primary production method is oxalate precipitation: using dysprosium chloride or nitrate solution as raw material, adjusting pH to 2 with oxalic acid, precipitating dysprosium oxalate by adding ammonia water. After heating and aging, the product is separated, washed, dried at 110°C, and finally calcined at 900-1000°C to form dysprosium oxide.
