Description

Neodymium Oxide (Nd₂O₃): Glass/Ceramic Pigment, NdFeB/Alloy Additive, Nd:YAG Laser, Rubber Modifier

A metal oxide with the chemical formula Nd₂O₃. It is insoluble in water but soluble in acids. As a rare earth oxide, it plays critical roles in glass, ceramics, electronics, and other fields.

Applications

  1. Primary use as a colorant for glass and ceramics.
  2. Raw material for producing metallic neodymium and NdFeB magnets. Adding 1.5%–2.5% Nd₂O₃ to magnesium/aluminum alloys enhances high-temperature performance, airtightness, and corrosion resistance, making it ideal for aerospace materials.
  3. High-purity Nd₂O₃-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) generates short-wavelength laser beams, widely used for welding/cutting thin materials (<10mm). In medicine, Nd:YAG lasers replace scalpels for surgical removals or wound sterilization.
  4. Also used for coloring glass/ceramics, and as an additive for rubber products.

Production Method

The production method of neodymium oxide is mainly the oxalate precipitation method. Specifically, a neodymium chloride or neodymium nitrate solution is used as the raw material. Oxalic acid is added to adjust the pH to 2, followed by the addition of ammonia water to precipitate neodymium oxalate. The precipitate undergoes heating and aging, then is separated and washed. It is dried at 110°C, and finally calcined at 900-1000°C to produce neodymium oxide.
