Samarium Fluoride (SmF₃): Medical scintillators, Laser crystals, IR fibers, Specialty alloys

An inorganic compound with the chemical formula SmF₃, appearing as light yellow powder with a density of 6.6 g/cm³. Melting point: 1,306°C, boiling point: >2,200°C. Insoluble in water and resistant to hydrochloric/nitric/sulfuric acids, but soluble in perchloric acid. Hygroscopic in air yet relatively stable.

Production Process

The chloride salt raw material is purified to separate other impurities, then treated with carbon dioxide to form carbonate. This reacts with high-purity fluorine in specialized equipment to produce fluoride salt. The reaction product is washed with hot purified water and dehydrated in a vacuum oven. Temperature is adjusted to remove free fluorine, followed by hydrogen treatment to transform the crystal phase and modify the refractive index.
