The Yaskawa GA50U2021ABA is a GA500 industrial variable frequency drive designed for 200 to 240 VAC three-phase motor systems. It provides a 7.5 HP or 5.5 kW Normal Duty rating with 21.0 A output current. Under Heavy Duty selection, the applicable rating is 5 HP or 3.7 kW with 17.6 A output current.
This model is suitable for medium-power machinery requiring adjustable motor speed, controlled acceleration, torque management and automation-system integration. The difference between its 7.5 HP Normal Duty and 5 HP Heavy Duty ratings must be considered before matching the drive to a motor.
The 21 A Normal Duty rating is generally appropriate for moderate-overload or variable-torque equipment such as centrifugal pumps and fans. The lower 17.6 A Heavy Duty rating should be used when the machine requires increased overload capacity, loaded starting or repeated acceleration.
Motor power alone is not a sufficient selection criterion. Confirm the motor full-load current, efficiency, service factor, starting torque and load inertia. A nominal 7.5 HP motor with a current above 21 A or a demanding constant-torque load may require the next drive size.
The GA500 platform supports V/f control and open-loop vector control for induction motors, together with compatible permanent-magnet motor operation. Open-loop vector control can provide improved low-speed torque and speed regulation without encoder feedback when accurate motor parameters and suitable autotuning are applied.
Commissioning should use the actual motor nameplate voltage, current, frequency, rated speed and power. Rotational autotuning must only be performed after confirming that the shaft and connected machinery can move safely.
Programmable digital and analog functions support run commands, speed references, status feedback, external faults and machine interlocks. Embedded RS-485 supports MEMOBUS/Modbus RTU. EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, PROFIBUS-DP, EtherCAT and other industrial protocols require compatible optional hardware.
The GA500 Safe Torque Off circuit is rated SIL3 under IEC 62061 and PLe under ISO 13849-1 when correctly integrated into a validated machine safety system. STO prevents torque-producing operation but does not electrically isolate the drive.

Typical applications include industrial pumps, fans, conveyors, packaging equipment, process machinery, mixers and material-handling systems. Review breakaway torque, continuous current, minimum speed, acceleration time, reversing cycles and stopping requirements.
The built-in braking transistor supports a separately selected external braking resistor. Resistance, peak energy and average thermal capacity must be calculated from the actual braking cycle. The resistor is not built into the standard drive.
Install the IP20 drive inside an appropriate control cabinet with sufficient ventilation. Verify supply capacity, upstream protection, conductor size, grounding and separation between motor cables and low-level signal wiring. Temperature, altitude, carrier frequency and mounting arrangement may require derating.
GA50U2012ABA provides 12.2 A Normal Duty and 11 A Heavy Duty output. GA50U2030ABA increases capacity to 30 A Normal Duty and 25 A Heavy Duty.
