The Yaskawa GA50UB018ABA is a specialized GA500 variable frequency drive designed for a 200 to 240 VAC single-phase input supply and control of a compatible three-phase motor. According to the official GA500 rating table, this model is rated for Heavy Duty operation at 5 HP or 3.7 kW with 17.6 A output current. A Normal Duty power or current rating is not assigned to this model.
This Heavy Duty-only classification is the most important selection difference. GA50UB018ABA must not be promoted as a dual-rated Normal Duty and Heavy Duty drive, even though some abbreviated databases display two identical current values.
GA50UB018ABA is intended for applications requiring a relatively high motor-output current from a 240 V single-phase power source. It controls a compatible three-phase motor and is not designed to operate a conventional single-phase capacitor-start motor.
The connected motor must not exceed the 17.6 A Heavy Duty output rating. Review motor full-load current, starting torque, load inertia, acceleration frequency and operating cycle. The single-phase supply circuit must also have sufficient current capacity, which can be considerably greater than the three-phase motor output current.
The GA500 platform supports V/f and open-loop vector control for induction motors, together with compatible permanent-magnet motor operation. Open-loop vector control can provide improved low-speed torque and speed regulation where correct motor data and autotuning are available.
Enter rated voltage, current, base frequency, speed and power from the actual three-phase motor nameplate. Motor parameters must not be derived from the incoming single-phase supply. Rotational autotuning should only be performed after confirming that shaft movement is safe.
Programmable digital and analog functions support run commands, speed references, external faults, status feedback and control interlocks. Embedded RS-485 communication supports MEMOBUS/Modbus RTU. Other industrial networks require compatible optional communication hardware.
Safe Torque Off is rated SIL3 under IEC 62061 and PLe under ISO 13849-1 when correctly integrated into a validated safety system. STO prevents torque-producing operation but does not isolate the drive from the incoming single-phase power supply.

Potential applications include conveyors, pumps, fans, packaging equipment, mixers and industrial machines installed where only 240 V single-phase utility power is available. Final suitability depends on supply capacity, motor current, load torque and acceleration requirements.
The built-in braking transistor permits connection of an external braking resistor. The resistor is not included and must be selected for the actual regenerative energy, resistance and braking duty.
The single-phase input is a major electrical-design consideration. Verify branch-circuit current capacity, upstream protection, conductor size, voltage drop and transformer capacity where applicable. Install the IP20 drive in a suitable ventilated enclosure and follow applicable derating requirements.
Before production, test motor direction, frequency limits, acceleration and deceleration, overload response, STO operation and control commands. Confirm that the driven machine remains within its mechanical limits.
GA50UB012ABA is the adjacent lower single-phase-input model and provides 3 HP with 11 A under Heavy Duty operation. GA50U2021ABA provides the same 17.6 A Heavy Duty current but requires a three-phase input supply.
