The Yaskawa GA50U4023ABA is a GA500 industrial variable frequency drive for 380 to 480 VAC three-phase systems. It provides a 15 HP or 11 kW Normal Duty rating with 23.4 A output current. For higher-overload applications, its Heavy Duty rating is 10 HP or 7.5 kW with 18.0 A output current.
The large difference between its Normal Duty and Heavy Duty power classifications is important during selection. This model can support a higher-power variable-torque load, but demanding constant-torque machinery must be evaluated using the lower Heavy Duty rating and current limit.
GA50U4023ABA is positioned above GA50U4018ABA in the 480 V GA500 range. Normal Duty is generally suitable for centrifugal pumps, fans and other loads with moderate overload requirements. Heavy Duty should be considered for conveyors, mixers, loaded starts and machinery that experiences frequent acceleration or substantial torque variation.
The connected motor must not be selected only by its 15 HP or 10 HP designation. Verify motor full-load current, service factor, starting torque, operating speed range and acceleration cycle. Adequate current margin is especially important when the equipment starts under load.
The GA500 platform supports V/f control and open-loop vector control for induction motors, as well as operation with compatible permanent-magnet motors. Open-loop vector control can provide improved low-speed torque and speed regulation without an external motor encoder when correct motor data and autotuning are used.
Motor voltage, current, base frequency, rated speed and power must be entered from the motor nameplate. Autotuning should be carried out according to the selected motor and control method, with the machine placed in a safe state before any rotational procedure.
Programmable digital and analog functions support operating commands, frequency reference, machine interlocks, status feedback and fault monitoring. Embedded RS-485 supports MEMOBUS/Modbus RTU. Industrial Ethernet and fieldbus networks require compatible GA500 option hardware.
Safe Torque Off is rated SIL3 under IEC 62061 and PLe under ISO 13849-1 when correctly incorporated into a validated safety circuit. STO disables torque production but does not isolate incoming voltage or replace a lockout device.

Applications include industrial pumps, fans, conveyors, packaging lines, process machinery, mixers and material-handling systems. Review load inertia, breakaway torque, continuous motor current, minimum speed, acceleration time and stopping frequency before selecting the duty class.
Rapid deceleration or overhauling loads can return energy to the DC bus. The built-in braking transistor supports a separately selected external braking resistor. Resistance and thermal capacity must match the actual regenerative energy and duty cycle.
The IP20 chassis requires installation inside a suitable industrial cabinet. At this power level, cabinet cooling, conductor sizing, upstream protection, grounding and terminal torque require careful engineering. Temperature, altitude, carrier frequency and installation arrangement may require derating.
Before production, test motor direction, frequency limits, acceleration and deceleration, fault response, safety inputs and controller commands. Confirm that the machine remains within its mechanical speed and torque limits.
GA50U4018ABA provides 17.5 A Normal Duty and 14.8 A Heavy Duty output. GA50U4031ABA increases capacity to 31 A Normal Duty and 24 A Heavy Duty.
