The Yaskawa GA50U4018ABA is a GA500 industrial variable frequency drive designed for 380 to 480 VAC three-phase motor systems. It provides a 10 HP or 7.5 kW motor rating under both Normal Duty and Heavy Duty selection. The applicable output-current limit is 17.5 A for Normal Duty operation and 14.8 A for Heavy Duty operation.
This model is positioned above GA50U4012ABA in the 480 V GA500 range and is suitable for machinery requiring greater continuous current. Although both duty classes carry a 10 HP rating, the correct selection must be based on motor nameplate current, acceleration demand, load inertia and required overload performance.
Normal Duty operation allows the full 17.5 A rating and is generally relevant to moderate-overload or variable-torque applications such as pumps and fans. Heavy Duty operation uses the lower 14.8 A current rating and should be considered for conveyors, mixers and machines that experience loaded starting, repeated acceleration or substantial torque changes.
A motor described as 10 HP is not automatically compatible. Motor efficiency, base frequency and full-load current vary between manufacturers and designs. Adequate current margin must be retained for the actual machine duty.
The GA500 platform supports V/f control and open-loop vector control for induction motors, together with compatible permanent-magnet motor operation. Open-loop vector control can improve low-speed torque and speed regulation when accurate motor data and appropriate autotuning have been applied.
Commissioning data should be taken from the connected motor nameplate. Rated voltage, current, frequency, speed and power must be entered correctly. Rotational autotuning should only be carried out after evaluating whether the motor shaft and connected machinery can rotate safely.
Programmable digital and analog functions support run commands, speed references, status feedback, fault signals and machine interlocks. Embedded RS-485 communication supports MEMOBUS/Modbus RTU. EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, PROFIBUS-DP, EtherCAT and other industrial networks require compatible optional communication hardware.
The GA500 Safe Torque Off function is rated SIL3 under IEC 62061 and PLe under ISO 13849-1 when correctly incorporated into a validated safety circuit. STO prevents torque-producing operation but does not disconnect incoming power or remove hazardous voltage from the terminals.

Typical applications include industrial pumps, fans, conveyors, packaging lines, mixers, process machinery and material-handling equipment. Engineering review should include breakaway torque, continuous current, load inertia, acceleration time, minimum speed and stopping frequency.
The built-in braking transistor supports connection of a correctly selected external braking resistor. The resistor is not built into the drive. Resistance, power rating and duty cycle must be calculated from the regenerative energy produced during deceleration.
The IP20 chassis requires installation in a suitable control cabinet. Provide adequate ventilation and observe applicable mounting clearances. Ambient temperature, altitude, carrier frequency and installation arrangement may require output derating. Power cables should be separated from analog and communication wiring, with grounding and shielding applied according to the installation manual.
GA50U4012ABA provides 11.9 A Normal Duty and 9.2 A Heavy Duty output. GA50U4023ABA provides 23.4 A Normal Duty and 18 A Heavy Duty output. Select the adjacent model if the required current falls outside the GA50U4018ABA operating range.
Please provide the complete drive and motor nameplates, application details and required communication protocol with the inquiry. Confirm optional network hardware, braking components, price and delivery time before ordering.
