Q: What is a fan clutch? What core role does it play in the automotive cooling system?
A: A fan clutch is a key device connecting the car engine fan and the water pump, essentially an "intelligent speed regulator". When the engine temperature is low, it reduces the fan speed or even stops the fan, reducing power loss and noise; when the engine temperature rises (e.g., during high-load operation), it automatically increases the fan speed to accelerate the heat dissipation of the coolant, ensuring the engine is always in the optimal operating temperature range.

Q: What are the common fault types of fan clutches? What obvious symptoms will appear after a fault occurs?
A: There are mainly 3 types of common faults, with clear and distinguishable corresponding symptoms: First, "lock-up failure" – the fan remains at low speed, causing the engine to overheat frequently (water temperature gauge exceeds the warning value), which is more obvious especially in traffic jams or when climbing hills. Second, "disengagement failure" – the fan is stuck in a high-speed state, leading to reduced vehicle power, increased fuel consumption, and continuous "buzzing" noise. Third, "mechanical wear" – damage to internal bearings or silicone oil leakage will cause fan vibration and abnormal noise, and oil stains may remain on the clutch housing.

Q: Why does the fan clutch of some cars rotate even when the engine is cold?
A: It is normal for some fan clutches to rotate slightly when the engine is cold, and this doesn’t indicate a fault. For silicone oil fan clutches, even at low temperatures, a small amount of silicone oil may remain in the working chamber, causing the fan to idle along with the input shaft (driven by the engine belt). This slight rotation is minimal and doesn’t generate significant airflow, so it doesn’t affect engine warm-up. For electronic fan clutches, the ECU may activate the fan even when the engine is cold if the air conditioning system is turned on—this helps cool the AC condenser and maintain the AC’s cooling effect. Additionally, some vehicles have a "pre-warm" function that allows minimal fan rotation to prevent component stiffness in cold weather. As long as the fan speed doesn’t stay high when the engine is cold (which would cause excessive noise or slow warm-up), this behavior is normal.
