Q: If a fan clutch has slight abnormal noise, will delaying repair affect driving safety?
A: Short-term low-speed driving may not pose obvious risks, but delay is not recommended. Slight abnormal noise is mostly a sign of initial wear of internal bearings or small amount of silicone oil leakage. If not handled in time, the wear will worsen, possibly leading to fan vibration and speed out of control. If the fan suddenly jams or falls off during high-speed driving, it will seriously threaten the safety of the engine and even the entire vehicle, and may also cause failures such as coolant leakage and engine overheating shutdown.
Q: When replacing a fan clutch, is it necessary to replace the fan blades at the same time?
A: Mandatory replacement is not required; it depends on the condition of the fan blades. If the blades have no cracks or deformation, and there is no obvious vibration during rotation (normal bearings), only the clutch needs to be replaced; if the blades are damaged or bent, or the fan bearings are worn (stiff rotation), the entire fan assembly must be replaced at the same time – to avoid uneven force on the new clutch due to blade problems, which shortens its service life.
Q: What problems can a fan clutch encounter in low-temperature environments?
A: In low-temperature environments, fan clutches (especially silicone oil types) may face several issues. First, the low temperature can increase the viscosity of the silicone oil inside the clutch. This makes the oil flow more slowly, causing a delay in the fan’s speed adjustment—when the engine needs cooling, the fan may not speed up promptly. Second, if moisture enters the clutch (e.g., through a damaged seal), the water can freeze in low temperatures, leading to internal jamming. This can cause the clutch to get stuck in a low-speed or high-speed mode, disrupting normal fan operation. Additionally, low temperatures can make the clutch’s rubber seals or gaskets harden and crack, reducing their sealing performance and allowing oil leakage. To mitigate these issues, it’s recommended to use winter-grade silicone oil (if applicable) and check the clutch’s seals regularly in cold climates.
