Q: How to initially judge whether a fan clutch is in normal working condition through simple operations?
A: The "cold-hot state comparison method" can be used for initial judgment: ① In cold state (engine off for several hours), turn the fan blades by hand, which should rotate easily (slight resistance is normal, as there is a small amount of silicone oil inside the clutch); ② In hot state (start the engine, idle until the water temperature rises to the normal range, about 90℃), test the fan speed by hand – at this time, the fan should rotate significantly faster, and the hand feels increased resistance (indicating the clutch is engaged); if the fan cannot rotate in cold state or the speed does not change in hot state, there is a high probability of failure.

Q: In cold regions, what problems are fan clutches prone to? How to deal with them?
A: Two types of problems are common in cold regions: First, "start-up delay" of mechanical temperature-controlled clutches. Paraffin elements shrink too tightly at low temperatures, making the initial fan speed too low, which may slow down engine warming (especially after cold start in winter). Second, the clutch housing is prone to embrittlement at low temperatures; if hit by external force (such as bumping during maintenance), cracks may occur. Solutions: After cold start, idle for 1-2 minutes, and drive only after the engine warms up slightly; avoid hitting the clutch housing hard during winter maintenance, and regularly check if the seal has leakage due to low-temperature shrinkage.

Q: What is the difference between a fan clutch and an electric fan?
A: The main difference lies in their driving and control mechanisms. A fan clutch works with a mechanical fan, which is connected to the engine’s crankshaft via a belt. The clutch adjusts the fan’s speed by controlling the torque transfer from the belt to the fan—for example, silicone oil fan clutches use oil flow to change the speed. In contrast, an electric fan is driven by an electric motor, not the engine. It is directly controlled by the ECU, which turns the fan on/off or adjusts its speed based on temperature signals. Electric fans have a simpler structure as they don’t rely on belt-driven components, but they consume more electrical energy from the vehicle’s battery. Fan clutches, on the other hand, use the engine’s mechanical power more efficiently but have more moving parts that can wear over time.
