Lanthanum Chloride Hydrate (LaCl₃·6H₂O): Chemical Additive, Reaction Catalyst, Growth Promoter

Lanthanum chloride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula LaCl₃•6H₂O, appearing as white crystals. It is soluble in water (approximately 25g of hydrate per 100mL at 18°C) and benzene. When heated to 760°C, it decomposes into lanthanum oxide.

Preparation of Lanthanum Chloride Hydrate
Dissolve an appropriate amount of lanthanum oxide in a 50% hydrochloric acid solution using steam bath heating. Typically, the oxide dissolves completely; if residual oxide remains at the container bottom, filter the solution. Heat the clarified solution in a 75°C water bath to evaporate most of the solvent. Crystals form upon cooling. Collect the crystals by filtration and dry them in a vacuum desiccator containing granular sodium hydroxide and magnesium perchlorate under reduced pressure to obtain hydrated lanthanum chloride.
