Description

Erbium Chloride Hydrate (ErCl₃·6H₂O): Chemical Additive, Reaction Catalyst, Growth Promoter

Erbium chloride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula ErCl3•6H2O, appearing as pink crystals. It is soluble in water (~25g of hydrate dissolves in 100mL water at 18°C) and benzene. When heated to 760°C, it decomposes to form erbium oxide.

Production Method

An appropriate amount of erbium oxide is dissolved in 50% hydrochloric acid solution with steam bath heating. While erbium oxide typically dissolves completely, any residual oxide at container bottom requires filtration. The clear solution is then heated in a 75°C water bath to remove most solvent. Crystals form upon cooling, which are collected by filtration and dried in a vacuum desiccator containing granular sodium hydroxide and magnesium perchlorate to obtain hydrated erbium chloride.
