Thulium Chloride Hydrate (TmCl₃·6H₂O): Chemical Additive, Reaction Catalyst, Growth Promoter

Thulium chloride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula TmCl3·6H2O, appearing as pale green crystals. It is soluble in water (approximately 25g of the hydrate dissolves in 100mL water at 18°C) and benzene. When heated to 760°C, it decomposes into thulium oxide.

Synthesis of Thulium Chloride Hydrate

Dissolve an appropriate amount of thulium oxide in a 50% hydrochloric acid solution using a steam bath. Typically, the oxide dissolves completely; if residual solids remain, filter the solution. Heat the clear solution on a 75°C water bath to evaporate most of the solvent. Crystals form upon cooling. Collect the crystals via filtration and dry them in a vacuum desiccator containing granular sodium hydroxide and magnesium perchlorate under reduced pressure to obtain hydrated thulium chloride.
