Q: Is it normal for the fan clutch to engage and disengage frequently when idling?
A: Yes, it’s normal at idle. When the car is idling, there’s little airflow through the radiator, so the engine temperature fluctuates easily. The clutch engages to cool the engine when temp rises, and disengages when temp drops—this frequent on-off helps keep the engine at a stable temperature. It’s not a problem unless the engine overheats.

Q: How to protect the fan clutch when driving on rough roads?
A: First, avoid hitting large potholes or rocks—they might knock the clutch or fan out of place. Second, check the clutch’s mounting bolts regularly (every 3 months) to make sure they’re tight—rough roads can loosen bolts. Third, if you often drive on rough roads, add a protective shield around the clutch (if the vehicle has space) to prevent debris from hitting it.

Q: Can a fan clutch fail because of a dirty air filter?
A: Indirectly, yes. A dirty air filter restricts airflow to the engine, making the engine work harder and generate more heat. This means the fan clutch has to engage more often to cool the engine, increasing wear on the clutch. Over time, this extra wear can make the clutch fail earlier. So replacing the air filter regularly also helps the clutch last longer.
