Q: I hear a "whirring" noise from the fan area that changes with engine speed. What is the problem?
A: This is typically a sign of bearing wear. Bearings running dry or without proper lubrication produce this high-frequency noise. If ignored, the wear will worsen, potentially leading to complete bearing seizure or disintegration, causing a serious incident where the fan could detach.
Q: I see oil stains around the fan hub. Is this serious?
A: Very serious. This is conclusive evidence of silicone fluid leakage. Even a small leak can degrade clutch performance (poor engagement or incomplete disengagement). A leak means the main seal has failed. The clutch must be replaced immediately, otherwise the problem will quickly worsen and may cause bearing damage due to lack of lubrication.
Q: For an electromagnetic fan clutch, how to perform a basic check with a multimeter?
A: You can measure the coil resistance. 1) Disconnect the electrical connector to the clutch. 2) Use the multimeter's ohms setting to measure the resistance between the two terminals of the connector. 3) Compare the reading to the standard value in the service manual (typically a few ohms to tens of ohms). Infinite resistance: Open circuit in the coil. Zero resistance: Short circuit in the coil. Both conditions require clutch replacement.
Q: Why does my fan clutch work intermittently?
A: This could be an intermittent fault, which is more complex to diagnose. Possible causes: 1) (Electromagnetic) Poor electrical connection or faulty relay. 2) (Viscous) Sticking valve mechanism that works sometimes and not others. 3) Contaminated or degraded silicone fluid causing unstable performance. 4) Deteriorated bimetallic spring with inaccurate temperature response.
