Grade 1.4404 corresponds to Type 316L / UNS S31603. It is a low-carbon, molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless steel used where corrosion requirements exceed those normally addressed by 1.4301.

The phrase “corrosive service” must be supported by actual operating data. Chemical concentration, temperature, chlorides, acidity, cleaning chemicals, deposits, crevices and design life all influence material suitability.

1.4404 is commonly selected for process frames, chemical equipment supports, coastal structures and hygienic machinery.

It is not universally resistant to every chemical. Buyers should provide medium, concentration, operating temperature, cleaning cycle and expected exposure conditions.

Crevices, deposits and stagnant liquid can create more severe localized corrosion conditions than open, freely drained surfaces.

Welded and polished components should be cleaned to remove heat tint and contamination where corrosion performance is critical. Surface restoration requirements should be stated on the fabrication drawing.
