Lanthanum is a silvery-gray metal with soft texture and density of 6.162g/cm³. Its melting point is 920℃ and boiling point is 3464℃ (at standard pressure). Chemically active, it quickly loses metallic luster when exposed to air, forming a blue oxide film that fails to protect the metal, which then further oxidizes into white oxide powder. It reacts slowly with cold water, dissolves easily in acids, and can react with various non-metals. Lanthanum metal is usually stored in mineral oil or rare gases.

Applications

1. Lanthanum metal is used in the production of nickel-metal hydride batteries, which is one of its most important applications.
2. Mainly used for manufacturing special alloys. [Lighter flints]

About Lanthanum

After separating lanthanum from other rare earth elements through ion exchange or solvent extraction technology, lanthanum metal can be prepared by metallothermic reduction. Unlike calcium thermal reduction of rare earth chlorides, lithium thermal reduction of rare earth chlorides is carried out in gas phase. The lithium thermal reduction reactor has two heating zones, with reduction and distillation processes conducted in the same equipment. Anhydrous lanthanum chloride is placed in the upper titanium reactor crucible (which also serves as the LaCl3 distillation chamber), while the reducing agent lithium metal is placed in the lower crucible. The stainless steel reaction vessel is then evacuated to 7Pa before heating begins. When the temperature reaches 1000℃, it is maintained for certain time to allow full reaction between LaCl3 vapor and lithium vapor. The reduced lanthanum metal solid particles fall into the lower crucible. After completing the reduction reaction, only the lower crucible is heated to distill LiCl into the upper crucible. The reduction process typically takes about 10 hours. To obtain purer lanthanum metal, the reducing agent lithium metal should be 99.97% high-purity lithium, and doubly distilled anhydrous LaCl3 should be used.
