Erbium nitrate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Er(NO3)3 • 6H2O, appearing as pink crystals. It is soluble in water (approximately 25g of the hydrate dissolves in 100mL water at 18°C) and benzene. When heated to 760°C, it decomposes into erbium oxide.

Synthesis of Erbium Nitrate Hydrate

Dissolve an appropriate amount of erbium oxide in a 50% nitric acid solution using a steam bath. Typically, the oxide dissolves completely; if residual solids remain, filter the solution. Heat the clear solution on a 75°C water bath to evaporate most of the solvent. Crystals form upon cooling. Collect the crystals via filtration and dry them in a vacuum desiccator containing granular sodium hydroxide and magnesium perchlorate under reduced pressure to obtain hydrated erbium nitrate.
