Neodymium Nitrate Hydrate (Nd(NO₃)₃·6H₂O): Chemical Additive, Reaction Catalyst, Growth Promoter

Neodymium nitrate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Nd(NO3)3 • 6H2O. It appears as purple crystals, soluble in water (approximately 25g of the hydrate dissolves in 100mL of water at 18°C) and benzene. When heated to 760°C, it decomposes into neodymium oxide.

Preparation of Neodymium Nitrate Hydrate

Dissolve an appropriate amount of neodymium oxide in a 50% nitric acid solution using a steam bath for heating. Typically, the oxide dissolves completely, but if a small residue remains at the bottom of the container, filtration is required. Transfer the clear solution to a 75°C water bath to evaporate most of the solvent. Upon cooling, crystals will form. Collect the crystals via filtration and place them in a vacuum desiccator containing granular sodium hydroxide and magnesium perchlorate. Dry under vacuum to obtain hydrated neodymium nitrate.
