Holmium Nitrate Hydrate (Ho(NO₃)₃·6H₂O): Chemical Additive, Reaction Catalyst, Growth Promoter

Holmium nitrate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Ho(NO₃)₃•6H₂O, appearing as pale yellow crystals. It is soluble in water (~25g of hydrate dissolves in 100mL water at 18°C) and benzene. When heated to 760°C, it decomposes to form holmium oxide.

Applications

Production Method

An appropriate amount of holmium oxide is dissolved in 50% nitric acid solution with steam bath heating. While holmium oxide typically dissolves completely, any residual oxide at the container bottom requires filtration. The clear solution is heated in a 75°C water bath to remove most solvent. Crystals form upon cooling, which are collected by filtration and dried in a vacuum desiccator containing granular sodium hydroxide and magnesium perchlorate to obtain hydrated holmium nitrate.
