Ensuring child safety in play environments requires solutions that are both reliable and visually unobtrusive. This project highlights the installation of a horizontal Webnet safety system designed specifically for overhead fall protection in a commercial playground. By utilizing marine-grade stainless steel, this installation provides a permanent, maintenance-free safety barrier that preserves the openness of the play space while meeting stringent safety standards.
Playground equipment often features elevated platforms and climbing structures, presenting a risk of falls. Traditional solid barriers can make supervision difficult and create a "caged-in" feeling. The challenge was to install a horizontal safety net that could catch falling children without obstructing the view, while also withstanding constant exposure to outdoor elements, including rain, humidity, and temperature fluctuations.
We implemented a high-tensile horizontal safety net fabricated from 1.5mm diameter stainless steel wire rope. The mesh features a 50mm x 50mm aperture, which is specifically designed to prevent hand and foot entrapment while providing a flexible, energy-absorbing surface in the event of a fall.
The entire system is tensioned and supported by robust 10mm suspension cables, which form the structural perimeter and ensure the net remains taut under dynamic loads. The choice of AISI 316 stainless steel is critical for this application, offering unmatched resistance to corrosion.
