Granular magnesium chloride appears as white crystals. Due to its small particle size, it is called granulated magnesium chloride. It has a bitter taste, is soluble in water and ethanol, and easily deliquesces in high humidity environments. At 116-118°C, it undergoes thermal decomposition and reacts with alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxides. In dry air, it loses water of crystallization through weathering. As a monoclinic crystal with salty properties, it exhibits certain corrosion resistance.

Applications include magnesium disinfectant production, frozen brine ceramics, fabric filling, paper making, and when mixed with magnesium oxide solution, forms hard and wear-resistant magnesium cement.
