Magnesium chloride is a chloride with the chemical formula MgCl2. These colorless crystals are highly deliquescent and represent typical ionic halides that dissolve easily in water. Hydrated magnesium chloride can be extracted from salt water or seawater, typically containing 6 molecules of water of crystallization. At temperatures above 95°C, water of crystallization is lost, and decomposition begins above 135°C, releasing hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas. This compound serves as a raw material for industrial magnesium production and is commonly used in prescription oral magnesium supplements.
