Description
Infrared Dome Lens 8-12um LWIR Security Camera Protection Window 25.4mm
This infrared dome lens is a 25.4mm hemispherical protection window engineered for 8-12um LWIR security cameras, where the dome must pass thermal radiation while shielding the camera from weather, impact, and contamination. The dome is formed from germanium and coated on both surfaces with a broadband LWIR anti-reflective layer, keeping transmission above 94 percent across the thermal band. For outdoor surveillance, an infrared dome lens is the difference between a camera that sees clearly at night and one that loses most of its thermal signal to reflection.
The hemispherical geometry provides a wide field of regard for pan-tilt-zoom cameras while maintaining uniform transmission across the dome surface. Each infrared dome is polished to a 40-20 scratch-dig quality, inspected for coating uniformity, and supplied with a measured spectral transmission curve. Custom diameters from 20mm to 150mm, alternate substrates such as chalcogenide glass for lower cost programs, and hydrophobic top coats for rain shedding are available for OEM security camera designs.

Key Advantages
  • Hemispherical design gives PTZ cameras a wide clear field of regard
  • LWIR AR coating keeps thermal signal loss below 6 percent
  • Protects the camera from weather, dust, and impact
  • Uniform transmission across the dome surface preserves image quality
  • Optional hydrophobic coating sheds rain and reduces cleaning
  • Custom diameters match dome housings from 20mm to 150mm
  • Chalcogenide option balances cost for volume programs
  • Measured transmission curve supplied with each batch
Infrared dome lenses are deployed in perimeter security, critical infrastructure monitoring, and border surveillance systems where thermal cameras operate continuously outdoors. Because the dome is the first optical surface in the system, its coating quality directly affects detection range in rain, fog, and dust. Our production process includes coating uniformity mapping across the hemisphere and thermal cycling tests to confirm that the dome survives sun exposure and freezing temperatures without coating stress. For high volume surveillance programs, the infrared dome lens can be supplied with an integrated sealing gasket and installation instructions, reducing assembly time and preventing moisture ingress at the housing interface.
Product Q&A
Why does a security camera need an infrared dome instead of a plastic one?
Plastic domes absorb most of the 8-12um thermal radiation, so a thermal camera behind a plastic dome sees almost nothing. An infrared dome lens made of germanium or chalcogenide transmits the thermal band, allowing the camera to deliver full night vision performance while still being protected from the environment.
What is the difference between germanium and chalcogenide domes?
Germanium offers the highest LWIR transmission and is the traditional choice, while chalcogenide glass provides a lower cost option with good transmission and better resistance to thermal runaway. We recommend germanium for premium cameras and chalcogenide for cost-sensitive volume products.
Can you provide domes with a rain-shedding coating?
Yes. A hydrophobic top coat can be applied over the AR coating, increasing the water contact angle so rain beads and rolls off. This keeps the thermal path clear during wet weather and reduces the frequency of manual cleaning.
How is dome thickness optimized for pressure and transmission?
Thickness is a trade-off between mechanical strength and transmission. We calculate the minimum thickness for your housing seal and pressure requirements, then verify transmission on the finished dome. Standard wall thickness ranges from 1.5mm to 4mm depending on diameter.
