High-Strength Austenitic Stainless Steels Nitronic 50 UNS S20910 XM-19 Round Bar
Nitronic 50 (UNS S20910, XM-19) round bar and forging bar are high-strength austenitic stainless steels with excellent corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and oxidation resistance, designed for harsh service environments up to 800°C.
1. Material Overview
Nitronic 50 (UNS S20910, corresponding to ASTM XM-19) is a nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel, belonging to the Fe-Cr-Ni-Mn-N alloy system. The alloy achieves high strength through solid solution strengthening of nitrogen and manganese, while maintaining excellent austenitic structure stability. Its chemical composition is carefully balanced, with high chromium (19-21%) and nickel (11.5-13.5%) contents to ensure corrosion resistance, and additions of nitrogen (0.2-0.4%) and manganese (4.0-6.0%) to enhance mechanical properties without compromising ductility and weldability.
2. Key Technical Properties
- Temperature Capability: Suitable for continuous service in the temperature range of -270°C to 800°C. It maintains good toughness at cryogenic temperatures and excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, with no significant structural degradation even after long-term exposure to 700-800°C.
- Corrosion Resistance: Exhibits superior resistance to general corrosion, pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in various aggressive media, including seawater, acidic solutions, alkaline environments, and chloride-containing media. Its pitting resistance equivalent (PREN) is typically above 35, outperforming conventional austenitic stainless steels such as 316L.
- Mechanical Strength: Boasts high tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness. Typical mechanical properties (annealed state): Tensile strength ≥ 860 MPa, Yield strength (0.2% offset) ≥ 450 MPa, Elongation ≥ 35%, Hardness (HB) ≤ 269. Forged bars exhibit enhanced strength and structural uniformity due to the forging process, with improved fatigue resistance under dynamic loads.
- Wear & Abrasion Resistance: The nitrogen-strengthened austenitic structure, combined with fine carbide precipitates (if aged appropriately), provides excellent wear resistance, making it suitable for applications involving sliding or impact abrasion.
- Structural Stability: Maintains stable austenitic structure even under extreme temperature fluctuations and long-term service, without phase transformation (e.g., no martensite formation at cryogenic temperatures or harmful intermetallic phase precipitation at elevated temperatures), ensuring consistent performance and dimensional integrity.
3. Typical Applications
Due to its comprehensive technical advantages, Nitronic 50 (UNS S20910, XM-19) round bar and forging bar are widely used in critical components across multiple harsh-environment industries:
- Aerospace & Defense: Aircraft engine components, landing gear parts, fasteners, and missile guidance system components.
- Oil & Gas: Downhole tools, wellhead equipment, valves, pumps, and offshore platform components (resistant to seawater corrosion and sour gas environments).
- Chemical Processing: Reactors, heat exchangers, piping, and valves for handling corrosive chemicals (acids, alkalis, salts) at elevated temperatures and pressures.
- Power Generation: Gas turbine components, steam turbine parts, and boiler tubes in thermal power plants and nuclear power plants (excluding core components).
- Marine Engineering: Ship propellers, shafts, marine hardware, and offshore wind turbine components (resistant to seawater erosion and marine atmospheric corrosion).
