The Samsung C2-5 is a widely used curved array (convex) transducer primarily designed for general abdominal, obstetrics, and gynecology imaging. The acoustic lens is the outermost gray or blue rubber-like surface of the probe that comes into direct contact with the patient.

• Focusing the Beam:The primary job of the acoustic lens is to focus the ultrasound beam in the "out-of-plane" or "elevation" direction. This ensures the ultrasound slice is thin, improving the spatial resolution of the image.
• Impedance Matching:The lens material is designed to have an acoustic impedance close to that of human tissue and ultrasound gel. This minimizes reflections at the skin surface, allowing maximum sound energy to penetrate the body.
• Patient Comfort & Safety:The lens provides a smooth, ergonomic surface for scanning. It also acts as an electrical insulator, protecting the patient from the internal piezoelectric elements.
• Chemical Protection:It serves as a barrier against ultrasound gels and disinfectants, preventing moisture from corroding the delicate internal crystals.

Why does the probe have "shadows" or "blind spots" in the image?

If the image shows vertical black streaks, it is often due to:

1.Delamination: The lens is peeling away from the internal crystals, creating an air gap that blocks sound waves.

2.Physical Damage: Deep cuts or "pitting" on the lens surface.

3.Crystal Failure: If the lens looks perfect but the shadow remains, the internal piezoelectric elements may be dead.
