Why is the ultrasound cable the most fragile part of the system?

Inside a single medical ultrasound cable are anywhere from 64 to over 288 individual micro-coaxial cables. Each wire is incredibly thin (often 40 to 46 AWG, thinner than a human hair). Because the cable is constantly twisted, pulled, stepped on, or rolled over by heavy machine wheels during daily use, these microscopic internal conductors are highly susceptible to mechanical fatigue and breaking.

What causes vertical black lines or dropouts on the ultrasound screen?

This is most commonly caused by broken micro-coaxial wires inside the transducer cable. When a wire snaps, the specific piezoelectric crystal element it connects to can no longer send or receive signals. This results in a "dead element," which appears as a permanent vertical black line or shadow across the imaging screen.
