 Medium-pressure screw compressor Reciprocating piston compressor
Principle By continuously compressing the gas through a pair of intermeshing screw rotors, without reciprocating motion The gas is compressed intermittently through the reciprocating motion of the piston within the cylinder.
Structure/Operation The structure is simple, with few moving parts. It operates smoothly, has no inertial force and generates little vibration. The structure is complex, with many moving parts (such as pistons, connecting rods, and valves), resulting in significant vibration and noise.
Efficiency/Energy Consumption The isothermal efficiency is relatively high, especially during partial load conditions, where it can be adjusted continuously by the slide valve to maintain a high efficiency. The full-load efficiency is close to that of excellent piston machines. The insulation efficiency is high. Under rated conditions and full load, the efficiency may be slightly better than that of the screw machine. However, the efficiency drops significantly during partial load operation.
Displacement/Pressure The compression process is continuous, the airflow is without pulsations, and the oil content is well controlled (by the injection screw). There are significant pulses in the exhaust, requiring a post-treatment buffer tank. The lubricating oil may be carried into the gas by the piston rings, resulting in a relatively high oil content.
Maintenance/Lifespan The maintenance is simple. The main tasks are to replace the "three filters and one oil" and the oil separator regularly. The maintenance workload is small. The maintenance is complex and frequent, and it is necessary to replace the wear-prone parts such as piston rings, valves, and bearing shells regularly. Professional technicians are required and the downtime is long.
Initial investment The cost of a one-time purchase is relatively high, especially for the main rotor. The one-time purchase cost is relatively low and the structure is relatively simple.
