Q: What is the difference between "pull-in current" and "hold-in current" for electromagnetic clutches?
A: Pull-in current is the high current required by the electromagnetic coil at the initial moment of engagement to overcome spring force and air gap, establishing the magnetic field. Hold-in current is the much smaller operating current needed only to maintain the engaged state after pull-in. Optimized circuit design utilizes this, automatically reducing current after engagement to minimize heat generation and energy consumption.
Q: What is "thermal fatigue"? How is the clutch's resistance to it tested?
A: Thermal fatigue refers to the damage and failure of materials caused by repeated heating and cooling. Testing involves placing the clutch in a thermal cycling chamber and subjecting it to thousands of rapid cycles between extreme low (e.g., -30°C) and high (e.g., 120°C) temperatures, then inspecting the housing, seals, and internal components for cracks, aging, or leaks.
Q: What is the operating speed range of the clutch?
A: Its designed operating speed must cover the engine's entire range from idle to maximum RPM. For heavy-duty diesel engines, this means it needs to operate reliably from about 600 RPM (idle) to 2500+ RPM (max RPM). The bearings, dynamic balance, and structural strength must all be optimized for this speed range.
Q: What final inspections do 100% of clutches undergo before leaving the factory?
A: 1) Air tightness test: A certain pressure of gas is applied to detect leaks, ensuring seal integrity. 2) Functional hand feel test: A technician manually rotates it to feel if the resistance is normal and for any abnormal sounds. 3) Visual appearance inspection: Checks for damage to the paint, labels, and threads. 4) For electromagnetic types: Resistance value and power-on engagement tests are conducted. This ensures every product delivered to the customer is qualified.
