Q: What is the proper procedure to 'bleed' the air out after replacing the fan clutch?
A: The fan clutch itself doesn't require bleeding, but the cooling system does after being opened. This is a critical step to prevent overheating:
1.Fill the cooling system with a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water.
2.Start the engine and let it idle with the radiator cap off until it reaches operating temperature. The thermostat will open, and air bubbles will rise to the surface.
3.As the level drops, top up the coolant until no more bubbles appear and the level remains stable.
4.Replace the radiator cap and check the overflow tank level after the engine cools.
Q: Should the fan clutch spin freely by hand when the engine is cold?
A: Yes, but with very noticeable resistance. You should be able to turn it, but it will not spin freely like a bicycle wheel. You will feel the viscous drag of the silicone fluid inside. If it is completely seized and won't budge, it's faulty. If it spins too freely with almost no resistance, the fluid may have leaked out, and it's also faulty. A good clutch has a firm, smooth, and consistent resistance when cold.
Q: What problems does the aging of a fan clutch’s "gasket" cause?
A: The gasket of a fan clutch (a rubber or fiber seal between the clutch’s housing halves) plays a critical role in preventing oil leakage and keeping contaminants out; its aging leads to multiple performance issues. First, aging causes the gasket to lose elasticity, harden, and develop cracks or gaps. For silicone oil fan clutches, these gaps allow silicone oil to leak out of the internal chamber—reduced oil volume means the clutch cannot transfer enough torque to the fan, resulting in insufficient fan speed even when the engine is hot. This leads to poor heat dissipation and potential engine overheating. Second, the damaged gasket cannot block external contaminants like dust, dirt, or road debris from entering the clutch. These impurities mix with the remaining silicone oil (in silicone oil types) or accumulate on the friction plates and bearings (in both types). Contaminated oil loses its viscosity, further reducing torque transfer, while debris accelerates wear on moving parts—friction plates become uneven, bearings grind, and the clutch starts to produce abnormal noises (grinding or squealing) during operation. Third, in severe cases, the combination of oil leakage and debris can cause the clutch’s internal components to seize or jam. The fan may get stuck in a fixed speed (too low or too high) or stop rotating entirely, disabling the cooling system. Regular inspection of the gasket—looking for cracks, hardening, or oil stains around the housing seam—can catch aging early; replacing the gasket promptly (along with refilling silicone oil if needed) prevents more costly clutch damage.
