5-Minute Check: Keep Your Fan Clutch Running Smoothly

Regular quick checks can prevent big problems. Add these simple steps to your routine maintenance.

Weekly Visual Inspection (1 Minute)

Check for Leaks: Look for oil stains around the fan clutch hub and underneath it.

Check for Damage: Look for cracks in the fan blades or clutch housing.

Check for Debris: Remove any leaves, dirt, or bugs blocking the radiator fins.

Monthly Operation Test (2 Minutes)

Cold Test: On a cold morning, start the engine. Listen. The fan should be loud for the first 60-90 seconds, then get noticeably quieter.

Hot Test: After a drive, carefully listen near the engine (keep clear of moving parts!). The fan should be engaged and audible. If it's silent when the engine is hot, that's a problem.

Seasonal Deep Check (2 Minutes)

With Engine OFF and Cool: Try to move the fan back and forth. There should be very little play or wobble. Excessive movement indicates bearing wear.

Check Belt Tension: A loose drive belt can cause slippage and poor performance. Press on the belt midway between pulleys. It should have about 1/2 inch of deflection.
