Q: My new fan clutch seems to spin a little at idle when the engine is hot. Is this normal?
A: Yes, this is completely normal. A fan clutch is not an on/off switch. It's a modulating device. When the engine is hot at idle, the clutch is partially engaged, allowing the fan to spin at a certain percentage of engine RPM (e.g., 50-70%) to provide necessary cooling. It's only fully disengaged when the engine is cold. If it were completely stationary when hot, that would actually be a sign of failure.

Q: What does "bi-metallic spring" mean on a fan clutch?
A: The bi-metallic spring is the temperature-sensing brain of the clutch. It's a coil made from two strips of different metals bonded together. As engine heat changes, these metals expand at different rates, causing the spring to coil or uncoil. This action controls a valve that opens and closes, regulating the flow of silicone fluid and thus engaging or disengaging the fan. It's a purely mechanical and brilliant design.

Q: Does a fan clutch work frequently when using the heater in winter?
A: Usually not—the heater uses engine waste heat, so no extra cooling is needed, and the clutch stays disengaged. If it works frequently, there may be an engine temp issue (e.g., faulty thermostat). Check the engine’s temperature control system.
