Q: I have a diesel truck. Do I need a special type of fan clutch?
A: Yes, diesel engines have unique cooling demands. They generate immense heat under load and often have higher under-hood temperatures. Fan clutches for diesel applications are specifically engineered for this:
Higher Lock-Up Rate: Often 90% or more to move a massive volume of air.
Robust Construction: Built with heavier-duty bearings and components to handle the vibration and stress of a diesel engine.

Using a clutch designed for a gasoline engine on a diesel will likely lead to overheating under load.

Q: What does 'non-thermal' or 'constant speed' fan clutch mean?
A: This refers to a very simple, outdated type of clutch that is not recommended for modern vehicles.
How it works: It's essentially a viscous coupler that is always partially engaged. It doesn't have a bi-metallic spring or thermal control. Fan speed increases roughly with engine RPM, but it never fully disengages.
Drawbacks: It causes constant parasitic drag, reducing fuel economy and power at all times. You'll hear the fan roar even on a cold start.

A: A "constant rotation" fault in an electronic fan clutch—where the fan runs at high speed continuously, even when the engine is cold—can be caused by several electrical or component issues. First, a faulty temperature sensor is a common cause: if the sensor is damaged or calibrated incorrectly, it may send a continuous high-temperature signal to the ECU, even when the engine is cool. The ECU, receiving this false signal, will keep the fan clutch engaged at high speed. Second, an ECU malfunction can lead to incorrect commands—if the ECU’s internal circuit for controlling the fan clutch is damaged, it may fail to reduce the current to the clutch’s electromagnetic coil, keeping the coil energized and the fan locked in high-speed rotation. Third, a short circuit in the electromagnetic coil itself can cause it to stay energized permanently. When the coil shorts, it bypasses the ECU’s current control, maintaining magnetic force that keeps the friction plates engaged, resulting in constant fan rotation.
