Description

EPTFE Shark Fin Antenna Integrated Mic Protective Acoustic Vent

Product Overview

This EPTFE protective acoustic vent is specifically intended for the microphone element integrated into shark fin antenna assemblies for telematics, eCall, and voice commands. The antenna housing sits on the highest point of the vehicle roof, fully exposed to driving rain, snow, ice, bird droppings, and automatic car wash rollers. The vent seals the built-in microphone against direct water intrusion while maintaining clear voice pickup for emergency eCall communications and hands-free calls. Its conformable nature fits within the tight, curved internal spaces of the antenna housing without interfering with GPS, cellular, or satellite radio signal reception. The material is highly resistant to UV radiation and ozone, ensuring no cracking or embrittlement after years of rooftop exposure. The vent is a critical safety component, helping ensure that the eCall system microphone remains operational after an accident, even if the vehicle is partially submerged.

Solution

Shark fin antennas integrate multiple functions, and microphone failure due to water ingress is a common warranty issue. A leaking mic port can also allow water into the antenna’s electronics. This EPTFE vent provides a watertight acoustic window that remains functional after pressure washing and immersion. By maintaining a dry microphone cavity, it guarantees that the eCall system’s emergency voice connection works when needed most—following a collision where the vehicle may have rolled or entered water. The solution supports automotive OEMs in meeting EU eCall regulation reliability requirements.

Application

Shark fin antenna assemblies, stubby antenna modules with integrated microphone, telematics control units with voice input, and external SOS call boxes.

How It Works

The vent is welded or adhered over the mic port inside the antenna housing. Voice sound passes through the microporous membrane to the internal microphone. Water driven into the antenna housing by high-pressure car washes is blocked by the hydrophobic pores. The membrane also prevents dust, insects, and pollen from entering the microphone cavity, ensuring long-term acoustic stability.

FAQ

Q1: Does car wax or ceramic coating affect the vent?

A: Car waxes may temporarily alter the surface energy, but rain and washing remove residues. The EPTFE’s inherent hydrophobicity is a bulk material property and is not degraded by typical car care products.

Q2: Can it withstand brush car washes?

A: The vent is recessed inside the antenna housing and is not in direct contact with brushes. The housing itself provides mechanical protection; the vent handles any water spray that enters through the mic opening.

Q3: Is the vent a field-replaceable part?

A: The vent is an integrated component of the antenna module. Field replacement is not typical; the entire antenna assembly would be replaced if damage occurs.
