The non-woven PET backing gives the thin EPTFE enough structural strength to resist the back-and-forth air pressure pulses of bass frequencies without ballooning or cracking. When the speaker is submerged, a thin layer of air remains on the membrane surface due to hydrophobicity, and sound continues to transmit because the air film couples the speaker’s vibrations to the water.
