A Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mother station is a core hub in the CNG supply chain, responsible for large-scale purification, compression, and distribution of natural gas. It plays an irreplaceable role in promoting the application of clean energy and optimizing the energy consumption structure.

CNG mother stations are usually built near natural gas pipelines or gas storage facilities, which ensures a stable and sufficient raw gas supply. Different from CNG daughter stations that only provide refueling services for vehicles, mother stations have a complete set of gas processing and compression systems, with the dual functions of supplying CNG to daughter stations and directly refueling heavy-duty vehicles and special gas-consuming equipment.

The station covers a relatively large area, and its construction needs to comply with strict safety and environmental protection standards. It is equipped with professional equipment such as gas purification units, compressors, high-pressure storage cylinders, filling dispensers, and gas metering systems.

1. Raw Gas Purification The natural gas extracted from pipelines first enters the purification system to remove impurities such as sulfur, water, carbon dioxide, and dust. This step is crucial to prevent corrosion of compressors and storage equipment, and to ensure the quality of CNG meets national standards.

2. Gas Compression The purified natural gas is sent to the multi-stage compression unit. Through a continuous compression process, the gas pressure is increased to 20–25 MPa, which is the standard storage pressure of CNG. Advanced compressors are adopted in modern mother stations to achieve efficient and energy-saving compression, reducing energy consumption during operation.

3. Storage and Distribution The compressed high-pressure natural gas is stored in high-pressure cylinder groups or underground storage tanks. Then it is distributed in two ways: one is to fill the CNG tube trailers, which transport the gas to various daughter stations in remote areas; the other is to directly refuel large vehicles such as long-distance trucks and buses through on-site filling dispensers.

1. Clean and Environmentally Friendly Natural gas is a clean fossil energy. Combustion of CNG produces far less sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter than gasoline and diesel, which helps reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

2. High Economic Efficiency Compared with traditional fuels, the price of natural gas is relatively stable and low, which can significantly reduce the fuel cost of vehicles and equipment. For the operation of the mother station itself, large-scale processing and distribution can achieve economies of scale and lower the unit cost of CNG.

3. Stable Supply Capacity Relying on pipeline gas sources, CNG mother stations can maintain continuous gas supply, which provides a reliable energy guarantee for the normal operation of downstream daughter stations and gas-consuming users.

4. Safety and Reliability The design, construction and operation of CNG mother stations strictly follow national and industrial safety specifications. Multiple safety protection measures are configured, such as leak detection systems, fire alarm systems, and emergency shutdown devices, to ensure the safe operation of the station.

With the global promotion of low-carbon development strategies, the demand for clean energy is constantly rising. CNG mother stations are widely used in urban public transportation, long-distance freight, industrial gas supply and other fields.
