OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) is a dual-purpose cable installed at the topmost position of high-voltage transmission lines . It replaces traditional steel shield wires to provide lightning protection, fault grounding, and high-speed fiber optic communication for smart grids, power control, and telecommunications.
Introduction
OPGW features a composite structure that isolates delicate optical fibers from severe mechanical and electrical stresses.
- Core Fiber Unit: Optical fibers (typically single-mode) are housed inside hermetically sealed stainless steel or aluminum tubes to protect them from moisture and pressure.
- Outer Armor: The core is surrounded by layers of heavy-duty wires like Aluminum-Clad Steel (ACS) and aluminum alloy, which provide tensile strength to span long distances between pylons while conducting electrical fault currents.

- Power Transmission & Distribution: Used on high-voltage lines (≥ 110 kV) to shield conductors from lightning strikes and safely ground the towers.
- Smart Grid Management: Enables the real-time transmission of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) data, allowing operators to automate grid control, monitor temperatures, and detect faults.
- Utility Communications: Provides a private, high-speed network for utility voice, video, and data communication across remote or difficult terrain.
- Commercial Telecom: Excess or "dark" fiber is frequently leased or sold to third-party telecommunications carriers to provide long-distance, high-capacity backbone interconnections between cities.
