Waterproof membrane thickness selection
Key factors affecting thickness selection
1. Waterproof ability and durability
- Thickness determines the ability of the roll to resist water pressure and puncture. For example: 1.5mm roll is suitable for conventional roofs, while underground projects require ≥2.0mm to resist soil side pressure.
- Thicker rolls (≥3.0mm) are more resistant to aging, but too thick may cause self-weight sliding or hollowing.
2. Environmental adaptability
- Temperature influence: High temperature areas (such as South China) need to choose high temperature resistant APP modified asphalt roll (softening point 160℃), low temperature areas (such as Northeast China) need SBS elastomer modified roll (resistant to -25℃).
- Environmental coefficient formula
- Open roof: +0.3mm
- Basement: +0.5mm
- Planted roof: +0.8mm (resistance to root puncture).
Thickness standards of different materials
1. PVC waterproofing membrane
- Conventional thickness: 1.5mm (minimum value 1.35mm, average value ≥1.5mm).
- Allowable error: ±0.3mm (such as 3.7mm~4.3mm).
2. TPO waterproofing membrane
- Common thickness: 1.2mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm, customizable.
3. SBS/APP modified asphalt membrane
- Conventional thickness: 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, polyester base is better than composite base.
4. Self-adhesive membrane
- Recommended thickness: above 2.0mm, ensure that the base layer is flat to avoid hollowing.

Scenario-based recommended thickness
1. Roofing project
- Cold areas: SBS modified asphalt roll (3mm~4mm).
- Hot areas: APP modified asphalt roll (3mm~4mm) or TPO roll (1.5mm~2.0mm).
2. Underground project
- Self-adhesive roll (2.0mm~3.0mm) or PVC roll (1.5mm~2.0mm).
3. Green roof
- ≥2.0mm, and add a root puncture resistance layer (such as EPDM roll).
Quality identification and construction points
1. Quality inspection
- Check the base (polyester felt is better than composite felt) and the uniformity of cross-section impregnation.
- Check the test report (such as GB 18242 standard).
2. Construction adaptation
- Temperature control
- Modified asphalt roll: The best construction temperature is 10~25℃, and the roll is preheated to 50~60℃ at low temperature.
- Self-adhesive roll: Construction at 5℃~40℃, the activity of the adhesive layer changes significantly with temperature.
- Overlap treatment: Thick rolls need to accurately control the melting depth to avoid step effects.
3. Environmental protection and standards
- Avoid using composite tires and recycled materials (listed as restricted).
