Functions of Suspension Air Springs
Suspension air springs are the core elastic components of air suspension systems. They replace traditional steel coil springs and utilize the reaction force of compressed air within a rubber airbag to support the vehicle's weight and absorb road impacts. Their most basic functions are to provide cushioning, vibration reduction, and load-bearing, ensuring that vibrations between the wheels and the vehicle body are effectively absorbed when driving on various road surfaces, thereby providing a smooth and comfortable ride for the driver and passengers.
The most important function of air springs is their adjustable stiffness (softness or firmness) and vehicle height. Unlike steel springs, which have a fixed stiffness, air springs have a nonlinearly variable stiffness. The stiffness of the suspension can be adjusted by dynamically adjusting the air volume within the airbag. During aggressive driving or high-speed driving, the system can increase air pressure to stiffen the suspension for better handling stability and roll support. For everyday driving where comfort is paramount, the suspension can be softened to maximize bump absorption. This adjustable capability also allows the vehicle to raise or lower ground clearance in real time based on varying road conditions and driving needs, for example, lowering it at high speeds to reduce wind resistance, or raising it to enhance maneuverability on unpaved roads.
Furthermore, air springs offer excellent load retention. Whether the vehicle is unladen or fully loaded, the air suspension system automatically maintains the vehicle's height at a preset level through inflation and deflation. This is particularly important for heavy-duty trucks, buses, and frequently loaded passenger cars. This function not only maintains the vehicle's apparent levelness but also helps protect vehicle components and delicate cargo, minimizing the degradation of handling and braking performance caused by load fluctuations, thereby extending the life of the vehicle and tires and reducing maintenance costs.
