Types of Wire Fence Galvanization
Various protective coatings and finishes are applied to steel wire fencing. Selecting the appropriate type for your specific application is crucial.
Below is an overview of common galvanization types available on the market, and why we offer and recommend only one specific type to our customers:
-
Electro-Galvanized (EG) - (Least Protective)
- Process: Zinc is electro-deposited onto bare wire before spooling. The spooled wire is then woven (e.g., hex mesh, fixed knot) or welded (e.g., welded wire mesh, hardware cloth) into fencing. The fence roll is subsequently coated again (plain galvanized – Class 1, 2, or 3) or PVC-coated.
- Cost: Lower - Uses less zinc by coating the entire roll at once after fabrication.
- Lifespan Outdoors: Short - Typically 3-5 years, depending on fence type and use.
- Key Disadvantage: The wire joints (knotted or welded) are not galvanized during the initial coating step and are prone to rust. This type is not designed for direct soil contact.
- Our Position: We do not offer or recommend this fencing. It is commonly found in big-box stores or mass-marketed online.
-
Hot-Dip Galvanized Before Welding/Weaving (HDG-BW) - (Better)
- Process: Bare wire is fully immersed in molten zinc (hot-dipped) before spooling (using more zinc than EG). The spooled wire is then woven or welded into fencing. The fence roll is subsequently coated again (plain galvanized – Class 1, 2, or 3) or PVC-coated.
- Cost: Moderate - More expensive than EG due to higher zinc use per wire, but less expensive than galvanizing the finished roll (see below).
- Lifespan Outdoors: Medium - Typically 5-7 years, depending on fence type and use.
- Key Disadvantage: Similar to EG, the wire joints formed during weaving or welding remain ungalvanized and are susceptible to rust. This type is also not engineered for direct soil contact.
- Our Position: While offering better protection than EG, we do not offer or recommend this type for our core application (containing animals) due to the vulnerable joints.
