Description

ASME SA350 LF2 Class 1 Alloy Steel Forged Flange B16.5 for Low Temperature

ASME SA350 is a standard specification for carbon steel and low-alloy steel forgings used for notch toughness testing of pipeline components. This specification covers various products such as forged or ring rolled flanges, forged fittings, and valves made of carbon steel and low-alloy steel, and is particularly suitable for low-temperature environments such as LNG facilities, cold storage, and polar engineering. And a notch toughness test is required. These products are manufactured according to specified dimensions or comply with the size standards specified in the standards.

The core advantages of ASME SA350 LF2 alloy steel flanges mainly focus on three aspects: low-temperature toughness, welding performance, and corrosion resistance. ASME SA350 LF2 alloy steel flanges can pass rigorous impact testing (-46 ° C) to ensure resistance to brittle fracture at low temperatures. Additionally, due to their low carbon content, typically ≤ 0.45, they are easy to weld. The trace alloying elements (such as nickel) in the chemical composition of ASME SA350 LF2 can enhance its adaptability to low-temperature corrosive environments.

Comparison of ASME SA350 LF2 Class 1 and Other Cryogenic Materials

  • VS SA350 LF3: ASME SA350 LF2 is also a low-temperature carbon steel forging, typically with a higher nickel content and a minimum design metal temperature as low as -101°C (-150°F). It is primarily used in more demanding cryogenic environments, such as the core cryogenic zone of LNG, but also comes at a higher cost. LF2 Class 1 is a more cost-effective option, suitable for temperatures above -46°C.
  • VS Austenitic stainless steels such as 304/316L: Austenitic stainless steels offer excellent low-temperature toughness and corrosion resistance, but are significantly more expensive than carbon steel and have relatively lower strength. Therefore, when corrosion resistance is not required or cost is a concern, ASME SA350 LF2 Class 1 offers a more economical low-temperature toughness solution.
  • VS ASTM A694 F52/F60/F65/F70: ASTM A694 is a high-strength, low-alloy steel flange material standard, also commonly used for low-temperature, high-pressure pipelines. It has a higher strength grade, but toughness requirements such as impact test temperature must be determined according to the specific grade and design temperature, and may not reach the same level as LF2 Class 1.

ASME SA350 LF2 Class 1 Processing and Manufacturing Requirement

  • Forging process: ASTM A350 LF2 alloy steel flanges require forging to improve material density and eliminate casting defects.
  • Heat treatment: ASTM A350 LF2 alloy steel flanges require normalizing or normalizing+tempering to refine grain size and enhance toughness.
  • Non destructive testing: ASTM A350 LF2 alloy steel flanges require ultrasonic testing (UT) or magnetic particle testing (MT) to ensure no cracks or inclusions.
  • Fine Grain: Standards mandate a grain size of grade 5 or finer, which is the metallurgical basis for ensuring low-temperature toughness.

ASME SA350 LF2 Class 1 Alloy Steel Flange Main Application

  • Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG): Cryogenic pipelines in LNG receiving terminals and liquefaction plants.

  • Petrochemicals: Olefin processing, gas separation units, cryogenic gas transmission pipelines.

  • Refrigeration Industry: Large-scale industrial refrigeration systems, ammonia or Freon pipelines in cold storage facilities.

  • Power Industry: Air separation units, cryogenic liquid storage and transportation.

  • Any pipeline system for hydrocarbons or chemical media whose operating temperature may drop to the range of -20°C to -46°C.
