ASTM B861 Gr.2 / UNS R50400 Titanium Seamless Pipe Corrosion-Resistant Pipe
Introduction and Standard Specification
This product is a seamless titanium pipe manufactured according to ASTM B861, the leading standard specification for titanium and titanium alloy seamless pipe intended for general corrosion-resisting and elevated temperature service.
Specifically, this pipe is made from Grade 2 Titanium, classified under the unified numbering system as UNS R50400. Grade 2 is commercially pure, unalloyed titanium, known for its excellent balance of strength, ductility, and weldability. It is the most common grade of titanium used in industrial applications. The standard mandates rigorous testing, including tension, flattening, bend, and hydrostatic tests, to ensure material integrity and performance.
Material Composition and Advantages
As an unalloyed "commercially pure" titanium, Grade 2 offers superior properties:
- Excellent Corrosion Resistance: Rapidly forms a stable, protective oxide layer in air and water, offering exceptional resistance to chlorides, oxidizing acids, and saltwater environments.
- High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Offers strength comparable to some steels but is about 40% lighter, making these pipes efficient for weight-sensitive designs.
- Good Fabricability: Excellent ductility and can be easily welded and formed.
- Wide Temperature Range: Maintains good mechanical properties from cryogenic temperatures up to approximately 600°F (315°C).
