The ASTM A179 L-type fin tube is primarily used in the tube bundle section of an Air-Cooled Heat Exchanger (ACHE) — commonly known as a fin fan cooler. Within this system, it plays a crucial role in the air-side heat transfer process.

How It Works in Refinery ACHEs:

  1. Hot hydrocarbon fluid (from a column or reactor) flows inside the A179 carbon steel tube.

  2. Aluminum L-type fins wound around the tube surface increase the surface area for air-side heat rejection.

  3. Large axial fans force ambient air across the finned tube bundle.

  4. Heat transfers from the fluid to the tube wall → to the fins → to the air.

  5. The cooled fluid is sent to the next processing step or storage.
