• Chemical Reactions

Air Bellow deployment involves a series of chemical reactions between sodium azideNaN3,potassium nitrateKNO3,and silicon dioxideSiO2to inflate the bag.When the crash sensor triggers an electric circuit,it creates high-temperature conditions necessary for NaN3 to decompose,producing sodium metalNaand nitrogen gasN2.The rapid pulse of hot nitrogen gas fills the airbag,which is made of thin nylon fabric.The KNO3 and SiO2 are present to remove the highly reactive and potentially explosive sodium metal by converting it to a harmless material.This entire process happens in approximately 1/25th of a second.

• Sensor Activation

Cars have special sensors called accelerometers that detect sudden changes in speed.These sensors measure forces during a crash,and if the deceleration is significant enough,the sensors send a signal to the airbag control unit,which decides whether to deploy the airbags.
