What is Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon containing trivalent cobalt, and is the only vitamin containing a metallic element. It is a red crystalline powder, odorless and tasteless, soluble in water, sparingly soluble in ethanol, chloroform. It is most stable under weakly acidic conditions (pH 4.5–5.0), decomposes in strong acids (pH < 2) or alkaline solutions, and is partially destroyed by heat. Higher plants and animals cannot produce vitamin B12; all vitamin B12 in nature is synthesized by microorganisms. Vitamin B12 is unique in that it requires a secretion from gastric parietal cells (endogenous factor) for absorption. It participates in the production of red blood cells in bone marrow, preventing pernicious anemia and protecting brain nerves from damage.


Applications

1. Promotes methyl transfer.

2. Promotes the development and maturation of red blood cells, ensuring normal hematopoietic function and preventing pernicious anemia; maintains nervous system health.

3. Exists as a coenzyme, increasing folic acid utilization and promoting the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

4. Activates amino acids and promotes nucleic acid biosynthesis, thus promoting protein synthesis; it plays an important role in the growth and development of infants and young children.

5. Metabolizes fatty acids, enabling the body to properly utilize fats, carbohydrates, and proteins.

6. Eliminates irritability, improves concentration, and enhances memory and balance.

7. An essential vitamin for healthy nervous system function, participating in the formation of a lipoprotein in nerve tissue.
