Shikimic acid is found in the dried, mature fruit of the star anise (Illicium verum), a plant of the Magnoliaceae family. Illicium verum is an evergreen tree that grows in moist, warm, semi-shaded environments, reaching heights of up to 20 meters. It is primarily found in southern mainland China. Its bark is gray to reddish-brown.
Shikimic acid, by affecting arachidonic acid metabolism, inhibits platelet aggregation, arterial and venous thrombosis, and cerebral thrombosis. It also has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties and can be used as an intermediate for antiviral and anticancer drugs.
