Description

What is Myristic Acid?

Myristic acid—also known as tetradecanoic acid—is a common saturated fatty acid found in many animal and vegetable fats and oils.


At room temperature, it appears as a white to yellowish-white waxy solid or powder; it is virtually odorless, insoluble in water, but soluble in certain organic solvents.


In nature, it occurs primarily in the form of glycerides within vegetable oils and fats, such as nutmeg oil (containing 70%–80%), coconut oil (17%–20%), and palm oil.


It is mainly used to formulate food flavorings and manufacture cosmetics and personal care products (serving, for instance, as an emulsifier or moisturizer in facial cleansers and skincare products); it also has industrial applications in the production of surfactants and fragrance solvents.


Application


1. Cleansing action: Acts as a surfactant (e.g., sodium myristate) to lower interfacial tension between water and oil, helping to remove skin oils and dirt; commonly found in facial cleansers and shampoos.


2. Skin feel modification: Added to creams to improve texture smoothness and reduce stickiness.


3. Emulsification aid: Reacts with alkaline ingredients to form emulsifiers, stabilizing water-oil mixtures.


4. Used in the production of soaps, lubricants, candles, and plastic additives.


5. Used as a food additive (e.g., E570) for defoaming or coating purposes, though direct consumption is rare.
