ASTM A847 is a standard specification for cold-formed welded square and rectangular steel pipe and tubing made of high-strength, low-alloy steel. It is known as a type of weathering steel or Corten steel because it develops a stable, rust-like, and protective layer when exposed to the atmosphere, which significantly enhances its resistance to corrosion compared to carbon steel. This makes it suitable for structures where both high strength and corrosion resistance are required, such as bridges, highway sign structures, and architectural elements.

There are significant differences in the welding methods between high frequency welded pipe and submerged arc welded pipe.
