The Bariatric Reclining Non-Magnetic MRI Wheelchair combines the features of a bariatric chair (600-pound capacity, 24-inch seat) with a full reclining backrest (up to 45 degrees). The chair is constructed from titanium-reinforced polymer with a steel-reinforced (non-magnetic stainless steel) recline mechanism. The seat is extra-deep (20 inches) to accommodate larger patients, and the leg rests elevate simultaneously with the backrest to maintain a comfortable position. The chair includes a heavy-duty gas spring (dual springs) to support the additional weight during recline. The armrests are extra-wide (4 inches) and height-adjustable. The rear wheels are 26 inches – larger than standard – to provide stability and distribute weight.
This wheelchair is for bariatric patients who also have conditions that prevent them from sitting upright. This includes patients with severe heart failure who need to sit semi-recumbent to breathe comfortably, patients with severe back who cannot tolerate upright sitting, and patients with pressure ulcers who need to offload the sacrum. These patients often present for MRI of the heart, spine, or other structures. The chair allows them to be transported from their hospital bed to the MRI suite in a comfortable, safe position. For patients who cannot be transferred to the MRI table (e.g., those who are too large for the table or who cannot lie flat), the chair itself can be positioned partially inside the bore, and the patient can remain in the chair for the scan – the reclining function allows the patient to be positioned at the appropriate angle for the anatomy of interest.
